๐๐ Scroll down for the Journey ๐๐
[1] Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
1st state of the trip. We're moving to Orlando. Our stuff is on a truck. We'll catch up to it after the trip (and once we find a house).
Conrad has named our car "Carpe" (as in carpe diem) โ the fifth member of the trip.
[2] Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
2nd state of the trip. Beach week with family. Spent way too much on Skee-Ball. No regrets.
[3] Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Stopped back through town to wrap up a few items and get some haircuts. Now heading north.
[4] New Jersey
3rd state. Drove through and waved to friends.
[5] New York
4th state. Drove through. We'll be back soon for the Finger Lakes. "Out there, there's a world outside of Yonkers...."
[6] Connecticut
5th state. One to explore another time. Didn't know we could be impressed by a beautiful parkway.
[7] Newport, Rhode Island
6th state. Dinner at the oldest restaurant in America. The chowder is clear?!?
[8] Somerset, Massachusetts
7th state. Stopover en route to Boston.
[9] Boston, Massachusetts
Said hello to Ricky! Ran around Boston Commons. It's like a painting this time of year.
[10] New Hampshire
8th state. Will be back once we hit Portland.
[11] Portland, Maine
9th state. Lobster rolls at Highroller = ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ.
[12] Mount Washington, New Hampshire
Scenic rural drive. Stayed at the beautiful Mount Washington Resort. Will come back.
Conrad played his first 18 holes of golf on the Mount Pleasant course (historic course, opened in 1895).
First time John has been told drones are forbidden. Won't be the last.
[13] Vermont
10th state. Passing through. Will return another time for the Woodstock Inn (tried and failed to visit during Covid).
[14] Amherst, Massachusetts
Eric Carle Museum for the kiddos. Underwhelming, but Conrad still got to pay homage to the "ca-ter-pit-er".
[15] Albany, New York
Stopover and celebration of CB's birthday! The New York capital building is beautiful, and in an unexpected move does not have a dome.
[16] Finger Lakes, New York
Buttonwood Grove Rieslings = ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ.
Wagner Vineyards Estate. Fantastic setting. Underwhelming wines.
Lakewood Vineyards. The Bubbly Candeo was excellent (local grape, free run juice, Prosecco style).
F.L.X. Wienery. Tasty greasy fare and a secret wine fridge!
[17] Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Said hello to Lucy and Jeremiah!
[18] Akron, Ohio
11th state. Said hello to Ken!
[19] Columbus, Ohio
Said hello to the Zimmermans!
The North Market was legit.
[20] Shelbyville, Kentucky
12th state. Mumsie, Granddaddy and Great!
Isabella started walking.
Conrad had his first golf lesson.
๐ณ๐ด๐ปโณ๐๐ฅ
[21] Las Vegas, Nevada (flight)
13th state. 13th anniversary trip for John and CB. Will return to Vegas with the kids and car later in the trip.
Fantastic food at Bardot, Din Tai Fung and Yellowtail. Enjoyed our friend Ruby Lewis's new show. The Mayfair Supper Club was ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ.
[22] Shelbyville, Kentucky
Back in town to celebrate July 4th!
โณ๐๐ฅ๐๐งจ๐
[23] Indiana
14th state. Back on the road.
[24] Illinois
15th state. Waved as we went by.
[25] St. Louis, Missouri
16th state. 1st national park of the trip. Passed through the gateway to the west. Probably the best weighted catenary arch we've seen.
[26] Kanas City, Kansas
17th state. So great to see the Hirtes! Gas station barbeque was ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ. Thanks Ryan!
[27] Hays, Kansas
Quick stopover. Visited the local waterpark and natural history museum.
After months of searching we decided to build a house. Build time means less pressure to finish the road trip by September. May slow the pace a bit.
[28] Broomsfield, Colorado
18th state. About 3,000 miles (or 45 hours of driving) are behind us, rounding out the first 1/3 of the trip.
Enjoyed a weekend golf binge in a beautiful setting.
[29] Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
2nd national park. Stunning natural beauty โ the mountains, the trees, the grass, the lakes, the valleys โ all majestic.
[30] Rock Springs, Wyoming
19th state. The 300 mile drive on the way in through southern Wyoming was dramatic in the nature-inspires-awe sort of way. Canyons gave way to foothills gave way to vast seas of green and brown grass dotted with buttes and mesas.
[31] Jackson, Wyoming
More natural beauty. Landscape was more dramatic than expected. Jackson has gone all-in on its cowboy roots.
Just started using TeslaFi to automatically log the car's data. Ugly website, awesome analytics. Looking forward to learning from it.
[32] Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
3rd national park. Picnicked on the shore of Jackson Lake. Stunning beauty. Conrad tried to put all the rocks back in the lake (standard playbook for him). Isabella tried to help.
[33] Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and Montana
20th state and 4th national park. More beautiful nature. Hard to get a sense of scale โ the wilderness is so vast. Walked through geyser country and saw Old Faithful erupt. Gnarly landscape. Like nothing else we've seen.
[34] Livingston, Montana
Spent three days off the grid. Montana's backyard game is ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ. Fantastic perspective. Enjoyed living out of an Airstream much more than we thought we would.
[35] Big Sky, Montana
Nice mix of luxury and nature. Quaint town, beautiful villages, stunning mountains.
[36] Idaho
21st state. Looking forward to visiting Boise but will need to be one for next time.
[37] Salt Lake City, Utah
22nd state. Sal Tlay Ka Siti.
[38] Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah
A stunning setting and home of many land speed records. Have wanted to see this for a long time. Needs to host a lightsaber duel at some point....
[39] Lake Tahoe, California
23rd state. Olympic Valley is beautiful in the summer, but suspect it is even better during ski season.
[40] Yosemite National Park, California
5th national park and our favorite thus far. Proximity to towering rock faces makes an impression.
[41] Sonoma, California
Made it from the east coast to the west coast. At this stage we're about 4,500 miles into the 10,000 mile journey. Wine country is still beautiful. Said hello to Max and Sarah!
Hamilton Family Vineyards Airbnb = ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ. Named our own vine ("Vinepe"...because that's what we do now. This was shortly after Conrad named our drone "Dronepe".)
Enjoyed tastings at Kivelstadt, Landmark, Pax, Hamilton and Two Shepherds. Great seeing William, Karen and the Two Shepherds crew!
[42] Muir Woods National Monument, California
Redwoods! 6th national park. Trees hundreds of feet tall and thousands of years old. Hard to fathom.
Getting confused between national forests, national parks, and national monuments (which can be nested within each other).
[43] Monterey, California
Beautiful drive down from Sonoma. It happened in Monterey, a long time ago...
The aquarium continues to impress. John remembered visiting there as a very young kid years ago.
[44] Pebble Beach, California
Visited sacred golf ground. Played The Hay course and enormous Putting Course. Will remember this for a long, long time. Conrad's take: "Pebble Beach is my favorite golf course." This could get expensive.
[45] 17 Mile Drive, California
Beautiful drive but underwhelming vs. its reputation. The golf courses have most of the views and the magic.
[46] Drive: Pacific Coast Highway, California
The drive from Carmel to San Louis Obispo was one of the best drives we've ever experienced, rivalling our all-time favorite (Torr Head Road in Northern Ireland).
It has all the good stuff: largely coastal, varied terrain (palm trees to pine trees and back again), substantial changes in elevation and weather, and curvy enough to make the driving a blast.
[47] San Luis Obispo, California
Stayed at The Madonna Inn. Alice in Wonderland meets The Wizard of Oz. Probably couldn't build this today โ it would be hopelessly corny without the patina.
[48] Anaheim, California
Disneyland! Great to experience the original park and California Adventure. Impressive use of limited space. Made for a great weekend.
[49] Palm Springs, California
The temperature rose from 80F in L.A. to 117F by the time we arrived at the La Quinta Resort and Club. Topped out at 125F. It almost feels like Qatar (which was 130F). Instant sweat. Stark terrain. Somehow the palm trees survive.
[50] Joshua Tree National Park, California
Like the backdrop to a Dr. Seuss book. Could easily film a sci-fi movie here. 7th national park. Tons of Joshua Trees and Cholla Cactuses. Immense boulders. And a classic hangout for stolen cattle.
[51] Las Vegas, Nevada
Taking a break after 5,000+ miles. Will be here for a month seeing what it's like to actually live in Las Vegas.
The food scene has unlimited depth. Entertainment (including golf) does as well. Can see why its a desirable second city or primary city if one makes aggressive use of the airport.
Some favorites (in addition to the obvious stuff) included the Las Vegas Golf Center (great for 4yo's learning the game), Famous Foods Street Eats, the Adventuredome, and the Children's Discovery Museum.
Saw Mumsie, Grandaddy, Projjal, Ollie and friends while there!
[52] Hoover Dam, Nevada
What happens when long-term thinking, pragmatism and ambition are combined with good incentives.
[53] Red Rock Canyon, Nevada
An alien landscape. Beautiful.
[54] Columbia, Missouri (flight)
John headed to Capital Camp for the week. A food and wine festival where people happened to talk about investing. Well curated group made for a great experience. Dined with some absolute legends of the investing world.
[55] Shelbyville, Kentucky (flight)
Isabella and Conrad spent the weekend with Mumsie and Granddaddy whilst Mom and Dad flew to Orlando.
[56] Orlando, Florida (flight)
24th state. An intense four days of work on the new home. Low voltage wiring. Interior design. Backyard. Appliances. All make sense...but nothing we've ever had to think about. We made what felt like 1,000 decisions in four days โ all of which we will (quite literally) have to live with.
Punctuated the work with some outstanding food and drink. Illume (shishito). 4 Rivers (most things). Bull & Bear ("fried chicken"). Wine Bar George.
[57] Las Vegas, Nevada (flight)
Flew back to the car. "Hello Carpe. I missed you." was Conrad's first remark when we got back in.
Brief stopover at the Palazzo. Eat > sleep > pack > aaaand we're back on the road.
[58] Zion National Park, Utah
Wow. 8th national park. Just about every vista looked like a painting. This will be hard to top.
[59] Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
Pretty good. 9th national park. Some impressive views of hoodoos, though limited to vistas. Possibly a better park with more extensive hiking, which we were unable to do.
[60] Torrey, Utah
Stopover outside Capitol Reef. Drone time.
[61] Capitol Reef National Park, Utah
Wow wow wow. 10th national park. The dirt road through the slot canyons at the far end of the park is probably where Anakin practiced his podracing. We recorded nearly the entire drive โ it just kept getting better and better. It's the best-least-talked-about thing we've experienced on our trip thus far.
[62] Drive: Zion โ Capitol Reef โ Moab
This drive deserves its own entry as it is one of the top five drives we have ever experienced. The many landscapes could each have been their own planet. Deep red sandstone. Stark grey moon-like downs. Cathedrals of rock. Winding canyons.
Our Route is shown below (the blue-purple line is from GPS data off our car, via Teslafi).
[63] Moab, Utah
Established a temporary home base to explore the nearby national parks.
[65] Canyonlands National Park, Utah
11th national park. Vast. Fantastic names e.g. "the island in the sky." Fun hiking.
[64] Arches National Park, Utah
12th national park. Didn't know hiking could be this much fun. Very accessible even with young kiddos.
[66] Bluff, Utah
Stopover in a beautiful rural resort. Not much nearby, but had all the charms of a thing done well โ landscape, rooms, outdoor areas, etc.
[67] Monument Valley, Arizona
25th state. Another "wow" setting. Our room overlooked the "hands" (rock formations) that watch over the valley. Could stare at the landscape for a long, long time.
[68] Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
Think we saved the best for last. Everything is viewed from a distance...but what a view. Hard to get a sense of time and scale. Literally staring at history. The name makes sense. 13th national park.
[69] Scottsdale, Arizona
Taking a break for a week.
[70] Winslow, Arizona
Well, I'm a-standin' on a corner
In Winslow, Arizona
Such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord
in a...Tesla.
Doesn't quite flow....
[70] Holbrook, Arizona
Spent the night in a teepee. Had to do it at least once.
[71] Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona
14th national park. Gnarly history. Petrified wood is harder than most rocks.
[72] Santa Fe, New Mexico
26th state. Tacos. Golf. Plenty of time outside.
[73] Amarillo, Texas
27th state. Steak. Then more steak. Pretty tasty.
[74] Dallas, Texas
Said hello to the Hills! And T! Great food, including corndogs and a fried PB&J at the Texas State Fair.
[75] Austin, Texas
More tacos. Said hello to the Hammetts and Olivia! Fantastic food scene, especially Loro.
[75] San Antonio, Texas
Hanging out with Steve! Paid our respects at the Alamo. The St. Anthony Hotel is one of the more beautiful hotels we've stayed in.
[76] Houston, Texas
Great to hang with the Lymberopoulos family!
[77] New Orleans, Louisiana
28th state. What. Great. Food. Brennans was the highlight. Will be back to eat much, much more.
[78] Mississippi
29th state. Waved as we went by.
[79] Mobile, Alabama
30th state. Finally met the Grinsteads in person!
[80] Tallahassee, Florida
Said hello to Grandad and Leanne, who also (finally) met Isabella!
[81] Seaside, Florida
Said hello to Memom and Gaga, who also (finally) met Isabella!
[82] Georgia
31st state. Waved as we went by. Will likely return later in the trip.
[83] Knoxville, Tennessee
32nd state. Great to see the Mitchells!
[84] Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee
Stunning. Caught the leaves still in their prime. 15th national park, and apparently America's most visited national park.
[85] Foothills Parkway, Tennessee
Another top drive from the trip. We caught the fall foliage just past its turning point. In the right light the trees looked like they were on fire.
[86] Shelbyville, Kentucky
Spending the holiday season with family. Nice to be in one place for a bit.
[87] Mexico City, Mexico (flight)
Trip with New Story to see the world's first 3D printed community, built for those that need it most.
This documentary is well worth the 37 minutes for those that want to learn more. Preview in the video below ๐.
[88] Shelbyville, Kentucky
In Kentucky for the holidays. Conradโs first formal golf lesson.
[89] Orlando, Florida (flight)
In loving memory of Uncle John.
[90] Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (flight)
Wonderful to be back in town and see some friends. Hey Shawn!!
[91] New York, New York (train)
Day trip to see Josh, Blas, Frontier and Rupert.
[92] Washington, DC (flight)
Celebrating William Booneโs birthday!
[93] Shelbyville, Kentucky (flight)
More holidays. New Year began with another Covid bout but we won.
[94] Knoxville, Tennessee
A few weeks in the lovely Knoxville.
[95] Asheville, North Carolina
33rd state. Gnarly downtown.
[96] Greenville, South Carolina
34th state. Great to see Meal!
[97] Augusta, Georgia
Didnโt realize we were so close or we would have planned more. Great to see the Cutsingers!
[98] St. Augustine, Florida
Great stopover at the historic Casa Monica hotel.
๐๐ We made it! Our new home ๐๐
[99] Orlando, Florida
We made it! Our house isnโt quite ready, but itโs starting to look like a house....
